Accessibility statement

Last updated: May 5, 2026

FisheryData aims to be usable by everyone — including people who use screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, voice control, magnification, or other assistive technologies. This statement explains where we are, where we're going, and how to reach us if you hit a barrier.

Conformance target

We work toward conformance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA. The Service is partially conformant — it meets most success criteria but a few are still in active improvement.

What works today

  • Semantic HTML structure with proper landmark regions and heading order.
  • Keyboard navigation for all primary flows: subscribe, sign in, search permits, configure alerts, manage subscription.
  • Visible focus indicators on every interactive element.
  • Form fields with visible labels and autocomplete hints where applicable.
  • High color contrast (at least 4.5:1 for body text) for the navy / yellow brand palette against the stone background.
  • A “Skip to main content” link as the first focusable element on every page.
  • Charts on fishery pages use SVG with descriptive ARIA labels and a machine-readable data table is available for download as CSV.

Known limitations

  • The mobile navigation menu was recently rebuilt; if you encounter focus-trap issues or screen-reader gaps please report them.
  • Some embedded charts (e.g. multi-fishery comparison) rely on visual differentiation by color in addition to legend labels. We're adding patterns and direct labels to charts in a forthcoming update.
  • The weekly issue HTML email and its archived versions use inline styling optimized for email clients, which can produce verbose screen-reader output.
  • Third-party flows we redirect to (Stripe Checkout, Stripe Customer Portal) are governed by their own accessibility commitments.

Testing approach

We test with axe DevTools, WAVE, manual keyboard navigation, and spot checks with VoiceOver (macOS) and NVDA (Windows). New features are reviewed before deployment.
